How a software company uses clear communication to become purpose-driven

How a software company uses clear communication to become purpose-driven

The requirements for the communication tone between the 30 employees in Acies are great when the organization has no middle managers.

Listen here, commercial director and co-owner Jesper Westfall talk about the collaboration with Feedwork.

About the cooperation

Acies is a company in Silkeborg that has been supplying software to kitchen and window manufacturers since 1978. Acies has a purpose driven organization, which means that employees organize themselves, coordinate their work and make decisions without middle managers. It requires an open and active communication on many topics, in order to make well-being and good task solutions go up into a higher unit.

In order to strengthen communication and procedures around self-management, we entered into a collaboration with Acies, which initially consisted of a 5-month course:

  • Interviews with employees and management
To gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of the organization
    members experience in everyday life
  • 4 themed workshops for all employees
Here, teaching and training in various disciplines took place as feedback,
    coaching, decision-making and psychological reassurance
  • Ongoing test actions/experiments
In connection with each workshop, experiments are set up in the different teams,
which aimed to create experiences of new ways of working together
  • Monthly Board Meetings
Project steering group meets to spar, share insights, formulate hypotheses
and adjust the direction of the process

About the dividend

As Jesper explains in the video above, they feel that they have become more courageous in their communication and with the feedback to each other. They also find new ways to run internal processes by succeeding in their experiments.

The cooperation has been extended as ACIES wants further support in implementing new decision-making models, meeting structures and improving cooperation.

Transcribing video

The cooperation has given us a more open communication in our company. We can feel that in everyday life.

My name is Jesper Westfall, and I am commercial director at Acies in Silkeborg.

We have what we call a purpose driven organization. And a purpose driven organization is an organization with minimal hierarchy.

That is, we do not have any middle managers in our company, although we have about 30 employees. We have a group of really talented and competent colleagues.

But a prerequisite for making an organization like that work, it's that people can figure out how to communicate together.

That's why we chose to engage with Feedwork because one of the things in communication that we experienced we had challenges with was sharing feedback with each other and being receptive to feedback.

In the process of tailoring this course for us, I know that Morten he took some walks with several of our colleagues to get a good understanding of our organization. Nor do I feel that here we are pressed into a structure or a process for how to do these things, but rather that our way of being is taken into account, and also the issues we have in our daily lives.

I guess everyone wants to communicate better, more openly, but with the processes and structures we have got through Feedwork, it has become much more concrete how we can then do it.

Another thing that the collaboration has given us, both as management in the company and also our employees, is more courage to be open with each other.

We all have faith that we can get better if we get good, constructive feedback, and we have become more courageous in giving to that.

We have chosen to extend our cooperation with Feedwork, because we can see that in addition to giving feedback to each other, there are also some structures around how we hold meetings, make decisions, manifest decisions in such a purpose driven organization.

It's important to get some good structures in around that, and we believe Feedwork can help us do that.
